VAZAR DASH 3 TURBINE OTTER WORLD’S LARGEST SINGLE TURBINE ENGINE AIRCRAFT

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DHC-3 OTTER

A total of 466 DHC-3 Otter Aircraft were built prior to 1969. Because of their superior durability, today. the majority of these craft remain in full service In over fifty countries. The reason the Otter has remained popular and has been so well maintained is because no other aircraft can provide the Otter’s combinat cOfl of cubic cabin space, load carrying ability, short takeoff and landing capability together with its structural excellence and superior engineering. The reason for this superiority in craftsmanship was the high Canadian standards during the Otler’s development — the DHC3 being the first single engined aircraft to qualify for approval In accordance wth the ICAO Category 0 airworthiness requirements. the highest set of standards in the world Additionally the availability of the DHC-3 on wheels, skis. amphibious and conventional floats enhances tne Otter’s value for operation in remote. undeveloped areas.

The only drawback in the continuing operation of these rugged craft has been the radial piston engine, a short-life. high maintenance unit. now no longer in production.

    VAZAR’S CONTRIBUTION TO FLYING PERFECTION

Over the past twenty years various companies and engineers had attempted to replace this unreliable R-1340 piston engine with a more powerf LII turbine. When VAZAR decided to tackle the challenge, it did so with the demands of industry in mind. VAZAR did not want to change the structural perfection of the Otter’s existing fuselage nor go into a complicated, time consuming and costly retrofitting. VAZAR thus engineered its conversion kit as a compact, modular, bolt~on unit maintaining as much of the original aircraft as was possible After several years of development, research and flight testing. certification was fully awarded by the United States (1988) and Canadian (1989) governments to replace the Otter’s outmoded radial with a powerful. 750 HP PT6A - 135 series turbine engine.
